Getting to Imlil from Marrakech: Your Toubkal Trailhead Guide

Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal, about 90 minutes from Marrakech. Here's how the transfer works, where to stay and how to arrange your first morning stress-free.

Mountain road and trail leading into the High Atlas above Imlil

Almost every Toubkal trek starts in Imlil, a village of roughly 1,740 m at the end of the Ait Mizane valley. It's close to Marrakech, but a little planning makes the first day far smoother.

Distance and time

Imlil lies about 65 km south of Marrakech. The drive usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and stops, with the final stretch climbing a winding mountain road.

Your transfer options

  • Private transfer (recommended): arranged by us, door to door from your Marrakech hotel or riad. We handle timing and luggage.
  • Shared grand taxi: cheaper, but they leave when full and can be crowded.
  • Hire car: possible, but parking and mountain roads require confidence.
Muleteers loading kit at the trailhead
At the trailhead our muleteers load the heavy bags so you walk with a daypack.

On arrival

You'll meet your guide and muleteers, check kit and pack the mules. Leave anything you won't need — spare luggage, laptops, formal clothes — at your Marrakech accommodation or our Imlil base.

Where to stay

If you start early, a Marrakech riad is fine. For a relaxed start, many trekkers spend the night before in Imlil, which also helps you adjust slightly to altitude. Ask us and we'll arrange it.

Before you leave Marrakech

  • Carry cash in small dirhams — there are few ATMs in Imlil
  • Buy snacks and any last-minute items in the city
  • Have your checklist ready and boots on your feet
